State Academic Choir of Armenia

The Armenian State Academic Choir was organized in 1936. Its creation and world recognition is tied in with a national artist of the USSR, USSR and Armenian State prize winner, professor Hovhannes Tchekidjian, who has been the artistic director and conductor of the choir since 1961. The choir has a long list of performances: it includes works by Armenian, Russian, and Western European composers. These are performed in the original in 27 languages of the world. The Academic Choir of Armenia always performs the Armenian songs with high professionalism: the Armenian choral works always true to the faultless principles of Komitas. His artistic activity contributes to the enrichment of the national composer heritage. Armenian contemporary composers often devote themselves to the worthy group with their choral works.

The latter give concerts in different countries of the world and cooperates with outstanding soloists and first-class choirs. Dmitriy Shostakovich, Aram Khachaturian, Evgeniy Mravinski and other musicians have all talked about the Armenian State Academic Choir with admiration. Throughout its activity the choir has received state and international awards, honorable callings, recorded numerous disks.

Yerevan Chamber Choir

The Yerevan Chamber Choir is one of the active promoters of Komitas art. Its artistic director and conductor Harutyun Topikyan began his life work with the Hoktemberyan City Council Choir… In 1979 he was one of the organizers and the artistic director of the TV and radio choir, which afterwards gained the state level and was called the "Armenian Song Chamber Choir".

In 1991-1994 he left for Beirut. After 17 years of silence he restored the "Gusan" choir created by Barsegh Kanachian. So they came back again, with firm determination, to become the first performer of all the secular heritage of Komitas’s, to record and treat the future generations to the dutifully true Komitas." It seems as if Komitas is everywhere: a conservatory, a quartet, a park, and a street carry his name, but… in reality Komitas is absent in us, alas… Up to this day only 1/5 of his entire heritage has been performed, that is to say, out of 130 secular choral songs 22 have been recorded. The longing of many years has been to return the estranged Komitas to his people", - says H.Topikyan.
"In March, 1996, I presented my Komitas program to the Catholicos of all Armenians Garegin I. The most holy believed… And promised to finance with a condition: only if the presented program gets implemented in one year.
After 20 trials, a small concert… 4 months later we finished working on our first recording. Our second concert dispelled all of those doubts, that it is impossible to listen to only two parts of Komitas.
With the support of the RA’s ministry of culture, our Komitas performance recordings were sent to Italy, and we got an invitation. For the 1700th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity in Armenia, the Catholicos and the Armenian churches together conducted the mass in St. Apolinar Catholic Church. The Catholics conducted the ceremony, and our choir sang. And in the wonderful temple of St.Vitale in Raven we performed parts from Komitas’s "Patarag".
Germany’s famous Poligram production released the first CD with our choir’s performances of Komitas.
… Komitas will save our people from spiritual degradation. The great musician will help those who need it to remain MEN. Komitas is something like faith: as the high art, he must dissolve in the blood of his people drop by drop. He has become estranged and is too far away. All this must be done by his dedicated apostles".
